Autumn in the Finale area: a journey through colors, flavors, and traditions
by SIMONA BARBERA
Autumn in the Finale area is a season to be experienced with all the senses. The warm colors of the vineyards, the scent of the woods, and the inland villages that come alive with fairs and festivals create a unique atmosphere. Mushrooms, chestnuts, truffles, new oil, and new wine take center stage at food events, markets, and experiences that attract visitors from all over Liguria and beyond.
If you are thinking of coming to Finale Ligure and its surroundings, you will find not only hiking and biking trails, but also unmissable opportunities to taste local products and experience authentic traditions.
Typical autumn products from Finale
During this season, in the woods and hills, porcini mushrooms, ovuli mushrooms, and chanterelles are gathered by expert foragers and served on tables in steaming tagliolini or intensely flavored omelets. Chestnuts, on the other hand, take center stage at roasted chestnut fairs, in rustic cakes and jams, while in local oil mills, new oil is pressed in October and November, ready to flavor focaccia, vegetables, and traditional dishes.
Truffles are a must, celebrated especially in Val Bormida, which ennobles every dish and attracts enthusiasts and gourmets with dedicated fairs.
Once the harvest is over to make the wines of the Finale area, local producers offer tastings of new wine, which can also be tasted in local taverns and restaurants. After a bike ride along the cycle paths of the hinterland or a walk in the woods, a stop at a typical trattoria or tavern is a must. Seasonal dishes reflect the deep connection with the territory: rich minestrone soups, savory pies, sautéed mushrooms, ravioli and gnocchi served with traditional sauces, accompanied by a good glass of Ligurian wine.
Not to mention the many fairs and events dedicated to the typical products of this season.
Events not to be missed
Autumn brings with it festivals and events that celebrate local produce.
From October 3 to 5, the National Truffle Festival in Millesimo transforms Val Bormida into the capital of taste with markets, show cooking, and tastings.
In Calizzano, on October 12, the event is “Funghi in Piazza” (Mushrooms in the Square), a day dedicated to local mushrooms with stalls and traditional dishes. On October 19, also in Calizzano, the “Festa d’Autunno” (Autumn Festival) features chestnuts, local products, and folk music.
In Finale Ligure, medieval alleys and squares provide the backdrop for events that combine history, culture, and gastronomy, with workshops dedicated to honey and local wine organized by local farms.
