We have selected some of the best road routes starting from or passing through Finale Ligure, ideal for exploring the Riviera di Ponente, the Ligurian hinterland and the surrounding areas on your bike.

Sea and inland between the Impero and Bormida valleys

A multi-day road trip combining the Ligurian coast, the inland region and the great climbs of the Apennines. From Finale Ligure, cycle westwards to Imperia, home of the Taggiasca olive and the Olive Oil Museum, the ideal stop to discover one of the region’s finest products.

From here, the route climbs up the Impero Valley, passing through villages and rural landscapes, until it reaches the climb to Colle di Nava, the natural gateway to Piedmont. The descent leads to Garessio, before returning to Liguria through the Bormida Valley and reaching Calizzano, famous for its mushrooms and high-altitude woods.

The final climb leads to Colle del Melogno, nestled in the Barbottina beech forest, before descending once again towards Finale Ligure, completing a loop rich in landscapes and charm.

Villas and gardens of western Liguria

A coastal route that follows the historic Via Aurelia and the Ponente cycle path, running alongside the sea for its entire length. From Finale Ligure, cycle towards Ponente until you reach Ventimiglia, passing through Imperia and Sanremo.

Along the route, which takes several days to complete, you will encounter some of the most beautiful historic villas and gardens on the Riviera, testament to the elegance and mild climate that have made this stretch of coastline famous. A linear, panoramic itinerary rich in cultural points of interest.

From the Ligurian Riviera to the Langhe. A UNESCO World Heritage Site

A challenging multi-day itinerary connecting the sea at Finale Ligure to the rolling hills of the Langhe. Cycle towards Savona and climb up to Colle di Cadibona, where the Alps and Apennines meet, crossing a border area rich in history and panoramic views.

Once over the pass, the route descends into the Piedmont hinterland to Saliceto and continues through vineyards and rolling hills towards Barolo, the symbolic heart of the Langhe. An itinerary that combines two different worlds in one great road trip experience.

From Finale Ligure to Alba and back

A wide loop connecting Finale Ligure to the Langhe and Monferrato regions before returning to the sea. From Colle del Melogno, descend towards Osiglia and travel along the Bormida Valley to Millesimo. Beyond Colle di Montezemolo, you enter Piedmont, reaching Alba and the villages that symbolise the UNESCO landscape: Barbaresco, Neive, Canelli and Santo Stefano Belbo.

Among historic wineries, vineyards and rolling hills, the route continues through Monferrato, passing through Bubbio and Monastero Bormida, before returning to Liguria through the Piana Crixia Park. Val Bormida leads back to the coast, from Vado Ligure to Finale Ligure, along the Aurelia road and the sea views of Bergeggi, Noli and Varigotti.

From Finale Ligure to Monte Beigua and back via Sassello

A loop connecting the coast of Finale Ligure to the heights of Beigua Park. The route starts along the coast road to Varazze, from where the climb begins towards Alpicella and Monte Beigua, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the entire protected area.

From the summit, descend towards Pianpaludo and Sassello, then continue along the Giovo road into Val Bormida. The final climb leads back to Colle del Melogno, before the final descent towards Finale Ligure.

From Finale Ligure to Sassello and Masone, returning via Arenzano and Giovo

A circular route that combines the coast, the Beigua Park and the Ligurian hinterland. From Finale Ligure, follow the Aurelia coastal road to Albissola, then climb towards Sassello and cross the Beigua Park until you reach Masone, known as the rainiest place in Italy.

From here, descend towards Voltri, on the outskirts of Genoa, and return to the Aurelia road, cycling to the charming village of Arenzano. The road then climbs back up to the Hermitage of Varazze and, via Giovo and Alpicella, leads to Pontinvrea and Val Bormida. Crossing the valley takes you to Colle del Melogno, from where you descend back to Finale Ligure.

From Finale Ligure to Portofino

An entirely coastal route connecting Finale Ligure to one of Liguria’s most iconic locations: Portofino. You cycle along the Aurelia road, passing through seaside towns and scenic stretches until you enter the city of Genoa, with its seafront promenade, historic neighbourhoods and the lively atmosphere of a large port city.

Once past the capital, the route continues towards the Ligurian Levante, among bays, promontories and increasingly Mediterranean landscapes, until it reaches Portofino, overlooking its famous marina. A linear itinerary, rich in spectacular views and perfect for experiencing the continuity of the Riviera in a single long ride.
