Abbazia Benedettina di Santa Maria
Infrastructure details
The oldest church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Finale area
Description
The Abbey of Finalpia was founded by the Olivetans (the so-called White Benedictines) at the end of the 1400s. The foundation was ratified by Pope Sixtus IV with a bull dated September 21, 1476.
It permanently passed to the Benedictine Congregation of Sublacense (one of the Families of the Benedictine Order) in 1905.
Since their arrival, the monks have dedicated themselves to the spiritual assistance of the parishioners and pilgrims who have always flocked to the adjacent Shrine of Our Lady Pia.
At the beginning of the 1900s, the Abbey was very close to the beach: the passage of the railway line in the 19th century separated it from the sea, which it had overlooked since the end of the 1400s.
