by MUDIF – Museo Diffuso del Finalese
Among the winding curves of the Finale hinterland, autumn offers a spectacle that goes far beyond the foliage. It is the ideal season to explore the Upper Bormida Valley by bicycle, where nature and history intertwine in a picturesque and fascinating landscape. Cycling through centuries-old woods and ancient villages, you will encounter evidence of noble families, medieval battles and ancient roads connecting the coast and the plains.
Among the unmissable stops are Bardineto and Calizzano, guardians of medieval castles and legends of the past, together with the Barbottina State Forest, a green lung that showcases nature in all its grandeur.

The castles of Bardineto and Calizzano: feudal memories within medieval walls
In the heart of the valley, the castles of Bardineto and Calizzano evoke centuries of struggles, dominations and family affairs. In Bardineto, the Castello dei Del Carretto – built in the 13th century by the historic marquis family – stands out for its original hexadecagonal layout. Sixteen sides, still partially visible, emerge from the rocks and woods, giving the area a mysterious and fascinating aura.
In Calizzano, on the other hand, the ruins of the ancient castle stand on a hill overlooking the village. Probably built at the same time as the one in Bardineto, it was enlarged by the Del Carretto family, damaged by the internal wars of the 15th century and finally demolished during the Napoleonic era. Today, it remains a silent but significant presence, inviting reflection on the troubled history of this area.
The Barbottina Forest: a green treasure among the hills
Between Colle del Melogno and Giogo di Giustenice lies the Barbottina State Forest, an unspoilt environment ideal for hiking and slow tourism. It is an almost pure beech forest covering approximately 240 hectares: here, the beech trees reach heights of up to 50 metres, creating a fairytale landscape that is both silent and vibrant.
The forest is a mosaic of biodiversity, with trees of different ages, scattered oaks, mountain maples at higher altitudes and ancient chestnut stumps, traces of past forest management. The Rio Barbottina and its tributaries accompany the route with their constant murmur, while the local fauna – foxes, fallow deer, wild boars – can sometimes be glimpsed at dusk.
