Finale Ligure is a mosaic of history, art, nature, and Mediterranean life: four historic districts, each with its unique soul.

Finalborgo, capital of the Marchesato Del Carretto (HD) Finalborgo, the most interesting of the historic nuclei of Finale, was the ancient Burgus Finarii, founded at the end of the 12th century by the marquises Del Carretto. It is dominated from above by Castel San Giovanni and the remains of Castel Gavone, with the imposing Torre dei Diamanti. The walls, the palaces, and the churches make it one of the best-preserved historic centers in the Savona area; for several years it has been included among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The splendid Chiostri di Santa Caterina (late 1400s) features columns and capitals made of Finale stone. The octagonal bell tower (1463) of S. Biagio testifies to the cultural exchanges with the Milanese dominion: set on a tower of the city walls, it resembles the bell tower of S. Gottardo in Corte in Milan. Inside the Basilica, the tour guide will reveal the balustrade of the main altar, decorated in trompe-l’oeil with a fine Eucharistic marble tablecloth (1793). The imaginative marble pulpit (1765) bears carvings of the symbols of the Evangelists. Among the jewels of Finalborgo is also the Teatro Aycardi (1804), a genuine “casket” with three tiers of almost miniature boxes.

Finalmarina. In the 1600s, the Spaniards chose Finalmarina as a stopover to the motherland, so much so that this Ligurian village was known as the Gateway to Spain. One of the most evident expressions of the power and wealth acquired by the Marina in the 17th century is the grand basilica of S. Giovanni Battista, a true triumph of stucco, marble, and decorations.

Varigotti, cherished for its tranquility by many figures from the world of culture and entertainment, is composed of small medieval nuclei clinging between olive trees and a “Saracen village,” with colorful houses featuring terrace roofs, directly overlooking the beach. The promontory of Varigotti with its imposing watchtower and its traces of the Byzantine castrum speaks to us of a past grandeur. A path that winds through the “fasce” and the tangles of the Mediterranean scrub leads to the ancient and silent church of S. Lorenzo, high on a rocky spur overlooking the bay of the Saracens. All around, a dizzying drop of white rocks that turn pink in the light of sunset.
